How to Make Easy Gingerbread House

Updated: Jan 17, 2021

Home schooling two children different ages is very difficult- my daughter is in Reception class and my son is in Year 4. They both have quite a lot of school work and I find it difficult to juggle both. My daughter's topic last week was Hansel and Gretel - school project was to make a Gingerbread house. I had this easy idea which helped me to focus on my son while my daughter was decorating the house.

I found Shreddies box, some old Christmas and wrapping paper, used Christmas cards, some pink paper, sweets wrappers and more. I cut the box diagonally to make the right shape for the roof.

There was this really cute used heart wrapping paper which I thought would be perfect for our roof!

We cut it out and glued it on both sides.

Used Christmas paper was beneficial too - we cut out some interesting details (like green birds, robins, etc.) and glued them on the box, trying to cover the original box.

Old Christmas cards were valuable too - I used one for making candy canes and the other one with really nice heart pattern for the door. I usually buy St. Nicholas sweets from Lidl in the beginning of December (last photo on the right). I cut out white and silver strips from the packaging and glued them on the roof - this could be sugar frosting! :-)

Sweet wrappers were fantastic for decorating!! ( Quality Street :-)I had some pink paper left so I made 3 little circles and turned them into lollipops! Anna decorated them with some wrappers and we attached 3 little wooden skewers.

Anna was very happy with her Gingerbread house and we didn't spend a penny! We used all materials we found at home! She really enjoyed decorating it and sticking different bits on :-) This activity helped me to spend some more time with my son and his homework. Hope you will find this idea practical and have fun making your own Gingerbread House! :-)
